Van Gogh likely did not cut his own ear off

According to a new book, the painter Vincent van Gogh did not slice off his left ear in a fit of madness and drunkenness in Arles in December 1888. His ear was severed by a sword wielded by his friend, the painter, Paul Gauguin, in a drunken row over a woman called Rachel and the true nature of art.

Lawsuit accuses Maplewood police chief of manipulation

Police Chief Robert J. Cimino allegedly manipulated promotion procedures and the Township Committee created a law to ensure a Cimino favorite became a captain, a civil lawsuit claimed. Those represent just some of the allegations raised by Vincent J. Cuozzo and Michael J. Mault, both lieutenants who have worked for more than 20 years in the department. They feel they were passed over for promotion improperly.

On the banning of nuts

According to a letter that went home to parents last week, Dr. Anjelica Allen, the principal of [Marshall] school, has a peanut allergy. Recently she was sitting next to a colleague who was eating peanut butter and went into anaphylactic shock. Thankfully, the principal has recovered, as I understand, but in response to this incident, the school went into food lock down. The school is now peanut-free.

NJ has worst air in the nation

But the methodology used by the ALA--taking the worse readings from monitors in different counties in each state--has been called too "absolutist" and too generalized by some critics to assess the overall health impact on the public.

"They assume the entire county has the same air quality as the place where the monitoring station is. If you have perfect compliance you get an "A," if not, you fail," said Ken Greene of the American Enterprise Institute.
