Maplewood firefighter jobs saved, police jobs extended

For the first time, the rank-and-file [fire dept. employees] will contribute toward their health benefits, $500 annually, starting this year, De Luca said.

Maplewood featured prominently in story about federal stimulus funds reaching main street

Cimino said the department will seek funding to keep the three officers and to fill three more positions that have been left unfilled because of budget constraints. If all six positions are approved, the department would return to full strength, with 66 officers in a community of nearly 23,000 people.

At roughly 3:30pm Wednesday, a bevy of heavily armed police officers descended on Maplewood's train station in a scene that frightened commuters. No need to panic, though; it was a practice run that happens about once a year in Maplewood, but, oddly, never in South Orange. 5:15 am

NY Times Local’s report on Maplewood’s cuts to police and fire department

"The cuts may mean that the community will lose its two school resource officers, one at the high school, one at the middle school, and other programs such as DARE," according to the story. Also noted: the township will maintain reciprocal mutual aid relationships with neighboring towns. Six jobs in total were slashed; the fire department and police department taking equal head count reductions. Via NY Times Local. 6:40 am
